Second Annual Conference: Exemplars and Exemplarism (October 5th-6th 2017)

Moral exemplarity, but also epistemic and aesthetic exemplarity, are cornerstones of philosophical reflection. Admiring and imitating the sage, or the saint, has for long been considered the standard path to wisdom and morality, and – in religious contexts - to salvation. Figures like Socrates and Jesus Christ, among many others, have been taken as sources of inspiration, as well as terms for comparison of one’s own conduct.
After a quite long neglect, the philosophical community has recently seen a resurgence of interest in such topic, highlighting both its theoretical and educational relevance. Such rehabilitation of exemplarity is mainly due to the work of Zagzebski, whose Exemplarist Moral Theory is now a landmark.
The aim of the conference is to gather scholars working on exemplarity, discussing both the Exemplarist theory and the topic of exemplars broadly conceived, exploring their strengths, but also their weaknesses, as well as addressing potential and actual criticisms.

Call for Papers for the III Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy (University of Minho Braga, Portugal 1-2 February 2018)

The Political Theory Group of the University of Minho is pleased to announce the III Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy, an international annual conference to be held every year in January at the University of Minho in Braga, Portugal. The purpose of this conference series is to promote the study of the tradition of political and moral philosophy and its legacy in shaping our institutions, culture and beliefs. But it will focus on how this tradition can contribute to tackling the challenges our societies are facing today. Every year the conference will have a specific theme, which will be chosen by taking into consideration the current global political situation.
In line with the spirit behind this new series of conferences, the third edition of the Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy will be dedicated to explore the ideas of “radicalism” and “compromise”.

Politics has frequently been defined as the art of the possible or the art of compromise. More dramatically, it has been depicted as the realm of Faustian deals and tragic choices. Max Webber famously wrote that the political call demands endurance in the face of disappointment. It is the realm of frustration and sacrifices, of fragile equilibriums between fiat justitia and raison d’état.
Sometimes the existence of political structures of accountability relaxes the dependence on character, reputation, and honor among conflicting parties. Reasonable civic duties suffice to deflate social conflicts and to compensate offended actors. Lacking these institutions, integrity becomes non-negotiable for social trust.
On occasion, however, a social order of tolerance would not emerge without sacrificing the moral integrity of former heroes that we now consider dogmatic integrists. Conversely, this institutional order of tolerance also allows the political space for the reconstruction of identity claims for recognition that derive their radical strength from their intrinsic aversion to political settlement.
From a historical point of view, our political languages and attitudes towards compromise, negotiation, bargaining, and agreement have changed in a myriad of contexts and traditions. As so did our conceptions of what seemed once worth sacrificing or defending.

The aim of this Colloquium is to bring to the fore philosophical treatments from various philosophical traditions of these aspects of political activity, and to do so from an historical perspective that might help us shed light on the shape of things as they are now.

The Colloquium welcomes original explorations of political conflicts that illuminate these dimensions of conceptual change in radicalism and compromise from different traditions and perspectives.

A. Musio, “Chiaroscuri. Figure dell’ethos”, Milano, Vita & Pensiero, 2017

Nella tecnica del chiaroscuro le immagini si originano attraverso il bilanciamento, la fusione e la sovrapposizione di tonalità chiare e scure secondo una reciproca ambivalenza. I chiari lasciano trasparire le figure, senza però poter diventare essi stessi trasparenti, gli scuri risaltano sfumature che, senza opacità, non possono essere rilevate. Tuttavia, né i toni chiari né quelli scuri possono diventare totalizzanti, pena l’invisibilità: della luce in un caso, del buio nell’altro.
La vita umana può essere colta nella stessa intrinseca ambivalenza: non si dà chiaro senza scuro. L’etica filosofica, però, non può convivere con il dinamismo dei chiaroscuri senza cercare di diradare ombre e ambiguità. Compito che diventa tanto più rilevante quando si tratta di pensare le figure dell’ethos, intese come i più importanti modi di essere e di porsi dell’uomo nei confronti di se stesso e delle sue relazioni. Attraverso le analisi di pensatori come Aristotele, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Arendt e Jankélévitch, intrecciate con alcune tra le più vertiginose pagine letterarie di Dostoevskij, il libro introduce il lettore in un percorso filosofico che, a partire dalla distinzione tra ambivalenza e ambiguità, affronta le più significative figure della vita morale.

“La realtà della realtà giuridica” (Pavia, 22 giugno 2017)

Il Collegio Golgi organizza per giovedì 22 giugno, alle ore 9,30 in Via Aselli 43, la terza edizione di “Nomologics”, seminario di ricerca sui problemi emergenti in filosofia del diritto e in epistemologia delle scienze sociali. L’incontro di quest’anno è dedicato al tema “La realtà della realtà giuridica” ed è patrocinato dal Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza dell’Università di Pavia, dal Dipartimento di Scienze giuridiche dell’Università Cattolica di Milano, dal Dipartimento di Scienze giuridiche “Cesare Beccaria” dell’Università degli Studi di Milano.
I partecipanti indagheranno le questioni fondamentali della ontologia giuridica (esiste una realtà giuridica distinta dalla realtà empirica? con quali modalità si costruiscono gli oggetti giuridici? quali sono i rapporti tra norme giuridiche e realtà empirica?) con particolare attenzione ai problemi della finzione, della proprietà, della decisione giudiziale, delle istituzioni politiche. Nel convegno verranno, inoltre, richiamate le teorie di alcuni autori che hanno contribuito a illuminare questi problemi, quali Benedetto Croce, Santi Romano, John Searle, Amedeo G. Conte.
